Marco Hernandez is currently a junior at Macalester College double majoring in Political Science and Latin American Studies. Before becoming a student at Macalester College, Marco was a community organizer for “Organizing for Action” in San Pablo, CA. He organized around the issue to expand health insurance coverage to undocumented residents in his county. In order to address this issue, he and a group of organizers phone banked, facilitated community meetings, spoke with health insurance representatives and nonprofits. With the experience gained being a community organizer, Marco plans to help empower the Latinx community in the U.S. He has worked with lawmakers such as Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) and California Assembly member Tony Thurmond to learn how government can be used to make a change and provide equity to underserved groups in the country. Currently, he is a Legislative & Research Consultant on Health at the Minnesota Council on Latino Affairs and Co-Chair of Adelante, the Latinx student organization at Macalester.
